Have you smelled the latest show in town? The theatres of Shakespeare’s time were ripe with smells that contributed to the experience of theatregoing, but it’s a world that we’ve struggled to recover in our more sanitised age. This workshop explores how perfumes, incense, and less pleasant odours were used in early modern drama, and asks what it might mean to stage a play that appeals to our noses as well as our other senses.
Perfuming the Early Modern Stage: Here’s a Sweet Stink Indeed is part of our ongoing Research in Action series. These workshops give audiences a chance to be part of the Globe’s exploration of early modern and contemporary performance culture. Using extracts from well-known and less-familiar plays, Globe actors and leading academics uncover and question the practices of the Shakespearean stage.
Expect discoveries – and expect to be asked for your feedback.
With Dr Chloe Preedy and Dr Freya Verlander, and thanks to the University of Exeter and the AHRC-funded Atmospheric Theatre project.
