The Midsummer Mechanicals are back! Our Olivier Award-nominated, ‘fantastically funny’ ★★★★★ (Broadway World) family show, based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse this summer.
One midsummer’s night, a band of amateur actors led by Nick Bottom staged their first ever play. It was so bold, so brilliant and so chaotic that it went down in theatre history.
Now these actors – known as the Mechanicals – are back to perform their latest masterpiece, and with half an hour to go until curtain-up, everything is in hand. The actors are (almost) assembled, the play is (nearly) rehearsed, and the audience (that’s you!) are ready. What could possibly go wrong? Everything, it turns out.
The Olivier Award-nominated 2022 production returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for more side-splitting fun and mayhem this summer. ‘Hanging out with these woodland thesps is a riot’ (The Times) and ‘a joy to watch…great family entertainment’ (British Theatre Guide). It’s a perfect first experience of Shakespeare’s plays as the Mechanicals ‘make a young audience feel right at home’ (The Guardian).
A co-production with Splendid Productions, Midsummer Mechanicals is recommended for everyone from age 5 to 105.
Explore A Midsummer Night’s Dream even further with one of our interactive workshops for ages 5 – 8 and 9 – 12 and their families.
This production will also run for 6 performances at Shakespeare North Playhouse from 15–18 July 2023. With both schools and public performances, Midsummer Mechanicals is the first Globe production to visit Shakespeare North Playhouse, a replica Shakespearean theatre which opened in July 2022.
