SAM WANAMAKER
CENTENARY.
2019 would have been the 100th birthday of our founder Sam Wanamaker.
Help Shakespeare’s Globe to continue his vision as we aim to raise £100,000 in his honour.
This year, the Globe’s visionary founder, Sam Wanamaker, would have celebrated his 100th birthday. To honour this special anniversary, this extraordinary man, and everything that the Globe does today, we are aiming to raise £100,000 to support his legacy and continue his incredible work.
Shakespeare’s Globe celebrates Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world by conducting a radical theatrical experiment. We do so as an educational charity without annual government subsidy.
Each year, we welcome a million visitors through our doors for vibrant performances; innovative study; vivid storytelling; and simply to marvel at one of the world’s most iconic buildings.
Your support is critical for the future of Shakespeare’s Globe.
SAM WANAMAKER & THE GLOBE
While visiting London in 1949, Sam discovered that the only monument to Shakespeare’s legendary theatre was a faded plaque on a factory wall. Knowing that there had to be something more, an idea took hold: he would construct an archetype of that theatre via the methods, means and materials of Shakespeare’s time.
That idea took decades of dedication and ceaseless campaigning to realise, but on completion it was a cultural revolution: altering expectations, breaking boundaries and redefining the meaning of ‘impossible’.
Sam’s name is now synonymous with our iconic theatres, and it was his passion and belief that led us here – a reminder, in unprecedented and uncertain times, that having a little faith can change the world.
GET INVOLVED
As an independent charity we do it all without government subsidy. A gift, large or small, can help us in a hundred ways:
A gift of just £10 could provide a child with a place on an education workshop – one that will encourage understanding and further academic achievement through lively interaction
A gift of £20 could provide enough beeswax candles to illuminate a chandelier for an entire performance in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – giving light for actors to shine.
A generous gift of £50 could provide enough fabric to construct an intricate and elaborate costume – one that could transform an actor into Juliet, Hamlet, Titania, or Falstaff.
All the world’s a stage… and the Globe plays many parts. What will your part be?
