I love being part of a team & meeting new people each time I volunteer
How long have you been a volunteer? 3 years.
Why did you decide to become a volunteer? I decided to become a volunteer when my youngest daughter went to university & I had a bit more time on my hands. I love the theatre & I love London so volunteering at the Globe ticked both these boxes! I was also attracted by the flexibility – the Globe needs volunteers seven days a week, afternoons and evenings – it couldn’t be easier!
Tell us about a memorable shift Every shift is memorable in some way! But a moment sticks in my mind from the Playing Shakespeare season in 2019 – Romeo & Juliet. I was volunteering at Door 2 and a group of teenage school boys were sitting in the lower gallery nearby. As Romeo discovered Juliet apparently dead & took his own life one of the lads literally gasped & shouted “No!” It was such a wonderfully natural ‘gut reaction’ – it’s always stayed with me.
What is the best thing about volunteering at Shakespeare’s Globe? The best things about volunteering at Shakespeare’s Globe: The teamwork! I love being part of a team & meeting new people each time I volunteer. Also I love the beautiful summer’s evenings on Bankside!
What have you learnt since becoming a volunteer? I have learnt lots about Shakespeare! I knew very little about his plays when I joined as a volunteer. Unlike some, I am not necessarily a lover of Shakespeare but am always interested & keen to learn. I have also learnt that the biscuits are absolutely impossible to resist!!
What piece of advice would you offer to somebody who is interested in becoming a volunteer The best advice I can give to someone interested in volunteering is to give it a try! We are a friendly bunch so I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do. Please don’t think you need to be highly educated in the arts or in Shakespeare’s works. I am neither of these things. I just really enjoy the opportunity to be involved in theatre & making sure patrons have a wonderful time.
